Patients with atrial fibrillation can also benefit from cardiac wellness principles. To reduce your risk of AFib, consider adopting the following dietary and lifestyle guidelines:
Add aerobic exercise to your routine. Try for at least 200 minutes per week. Learn the target heart rate for your age and monitor your heart rate throughout exercise. Talk to your healthcare provider before starting any exercise plan. Avoid late evening exercise or workouts.
Stay hydrated. Aim to drink 2 litres of non alcoholic/non caffeinated beverages per day.
Limit alcohol/caffeine consumption. If you do drink alcohol, limited to 1 standard drink per day. Complete abstinence from alcohol may be preferred in selected patients. Avoid caffeine before bedtime.
Maintain a healthy weight. One of the strongest factors associated with Afib is body weight. Tips to a healthy weight are as follows:
- Follow a heart healthy diet (control your portion size, eat more fruits and vegetables, select whole grains, limit unhealthy fats, choose low-fat protein sources, limit or reduce salt, plan ahead: create daily menus and allow yourself the occasional treat).
- Split calories into 5 meals per day, with the majority of calories consumed at breakfast and lunch.
- Avoid snacking
- Avoid late night meals
Quit smoking and using tobacco products.
Be screened for and/or manage sleep apnea with CPAP. At home sleep apnea tests are available for purchase.
Take Magnesium supplements (not recommended for patients with kidney problems)
Patients with atrial fibrillation can also benefit from cardiac wellness principles.
The MyVIEW Cardiac Wellness Program combines exceptional care with wellness practices. This 6-month virtual service provides exercise, nutritional, and psychosocial support for people with cardiac related concerns.
The goal of the program is to guide people towards a heart-healthy lifestyle by giving them a better understanding of their heart, physical activity, nutrition, mental health and more.
The MyVIEW Cardiac Wellness healthcare team includes: kinesiologists, dietitians, wellness coaches, social workers, psychotherapists and more.

Many patients with atrial fibrillation also suffer from anxiety and/or depression.
